GGR News!

January 29th, 2014

IMG_0189GGR: Girlz Gone Riding, is proud to say we have now reached over 500 members! We now are able to attend cycling events and represent with our own booth! The booth was 100% funded by the GGR members. We had an online fund raising campaign to pay for the booth. It’s amazing what you can accomplish as a group when you ask for help!  GGR has been attending the Pedalfest series, a local, fun, family oriented race series located in Castaic. The race promoters, Greg and Gina Flanagan have been instrumental with GGR being a partner in their series and we thank them so very, very much for supporting women’s cycling and GGR! This is a fun series and there are still a few races left! Sign up here! http://www.racepedalfest.com/. Make sure you come over to the purple GGR booth and say HI!

ATLXTV.com has recognized GGR! The writer , Sheri Matthews, heard about us at a running event in Vancouver! Sheri talked with Wendy for a few hours and wrote this article about GGR: http://www.atlxtv.com/2014/01/28/women-mountain-biking-changes-honors-lives/.

IMG_0322GGR is so very grateful for our year round supporters and we want to thank them again! CORBA, Cycle World Chatsworth, Kali Protectives, Newbury Park Bike Shop, JRA Bike & Brew. If you want to open your business up to more women, get involved with your women’s cycling community! Contact wendy@girlzgoneriding.com to get your shop and products involved with GGR!

GGR encourages all to wear bells on their bikes! Bells alert all others on the trails that you are there. Our trails are multi use trails and everyone deserves to ride/hike/run and bike them. Let’s let them know us bikers are approaching with a bell! You can purchase a Danusia bell directly through CORBA or GGR: http://corbamtb.com/store/store.shtml OR http://www.girlzgoneriding.com/ggr_products/danusia-bell/.

GGR would also like to remind you to look ahead and be aware of others on the trails. Let’s keep the trails open to ALL by riding safe! Please give hikers and horses the right of way and slow down & smile when you see them! Let others on the trails know that bikers are friendly and welcome sharing the trails with all.

For all future events, please check out the GGR Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/350083721682365/events/

Strawberry Peak Trailwork – February 16

January 28th, 2014

On February 16, we’ll be heading back up to work on Strawberry Peak trail.

Drainage in need of repair

Drainage in need of repair

The trail is still closed to public use, and while much work has been completed, there is still much more to be done. Our goal is to get the classic Colby Trail/Strawberry Peak trail loop in good enough condition that the forest service will consider lifting the closure on that trail this year.

Details of where on the trail we will work will depend on how much is accomplished by a professional trailbuilder who will be doing some major repairs the week prior. Final meeting place will be announced closer to the trailwork day, but should be either Redbox or Clear Creek. Carpooling from ACH just north of the 210 freeway is also an option.

There will be some preparatory work on Friday, Feb 14 and/or Saturday Feb 15, and we’d welcome a small number (3 – 5 people) for the prep work. Contact Steve Messer if you’re interested in the prep work, or sign up on Meetup for the trailwork day on Sunday, Feb 16. We will probably meet at 8 a.m. and work through until about 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided afterwards.

The Forest Service requires you to wear long sleeves and long pants, sturdy work boots or hiking shoes. Bring a water bottle/hydration pack, sunscreen and trail snacks, but lunch will be provided afterwards. We will supply tools and other required safety gear, including hard hats and gloves (though you’re welcome to bring your own if you have them).

No experience is necessary, as trail crew leaders will cover safety training and tool use. We always have a great time, and while the work is hard, the reward of being able to later ride a trail that you helped restore is a huge reward by itself.

This is one of the most iconic and classic Southern California backcountry rides, and we’re excited to get it completely restored with the generous support of REI and the National Forest Foundation.

Jan 25th Backbone Trailwork Report and Photos

January 28th, 2014

Sixteen CORBA volunteers and five from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council returned to the Backbone Trail between Latigo Canyon Road and Newton Motorway to continue with the work we started in November. Then, we mostly installed and cleaned drainage nicks on the steepest, rockiest, most eroded part of the trail, but also cleared some brush. This past Saturday, we installed 15 to 18 new drainage nicks on parts of the trail that were less susceptible to erosion but still at risk, armored a switchback with large stones where people had been  cutting the corner, and cleared encroaching brush from about 2/3 of its 1.4-mile length.

Back at the trailhead, CORBA volunteers show off the swag they won in the prize give-away.

When we brush the trail, we try to clear growth about 3-feet from the edge of the trail. This brings it back to the standard for a multi-use trail. It also means we won’t have to return for a few years to again clear the brush which grows back in at a rate of about one foot per year.

We were finished installing the drainage nicks about an hour before finishing time, so we made use of the time to clear slough. (Slough is the dirt and other debris that falls on the inside edge of the trail from the slope above. The piles at the edge of the trail narrow it.) By removing the slough and brush at the trail edge, the trail has a more open feeling, and people can use the whole width of it, not just the outside edge.

Afterwards, CORBA volunteers were treated to a prize drawing and lunch at the Urbane Cafe or adjacent Habit Hamburger Grill to thank them for their help. Great job, everybody!

To see all the volunteers and the work they did, you can view the photo gallery of this trailwork.

eTerraTimes Publication to Become Bimonthly

January 27th, 2014

eTT_Logo2

CORBA’s web- and email-based news publication, the eTerraTimes, will be only published every other month, starting in February 2014. Future important messages will be sent by email, rather than using the eTerraTimes to distribute them. The purpose of this change it to reduce the workload on the volunteers who put this newsletter together.

Space Mountain Trailwork Scheduled for Sunday February 23

January 22nd, 2014

Join CORBA on a rare Sunday workday as we fix up CORBA’s adopted trail, Space Mountain (Los Robles Trail West) in Thousand Oaks. We’ll be doing treadwork – clearing silt out of the drainages – starting at the top and working back down. This is a favorite mountain biking trail, especially in the winter when other trails are muddy. Our work on Sunday will help keep the water off the trail and open to riding next winter!

After the trailwork is finished, CORBA will have prizes for some (or all) lucky volunteers, and treat you to lunch afterwards.
No experience is necessary to help out with trailwork. Tools and instructions on how to use them safely and effectively will be provided. Children must be over 7-years old to attend, and children under 14 must be constantly and directly supervised by their parent or guardian who brought them. And you don’t need to be a mountain biker to help out – Everybody is welcome! For more information on trailwork in general, visit our trail crew web page.

Be sure to wear protective clothing (sturdy shoes, long pants and sleeves, hat, golves) and bring snacks, sunscreen and water. CORBA will provide the tools and training.

We request that you pre-register online so that we’ll know how many tools to provide. Remember, by registering here, CORBA will treat you to lunch afterwards, and enter you in the drawing for mountain biking prizes!

CORBA’s thank-you lunch will be after trailwork ends at 1:00 pm, so bring some snacks to tide you over.

Meeting location and details are on the online registration page.

During Topanga Creek Bicycle’s Black Friday sale, the shop charged $100 extra on any new bike sale, then turned around and gave CORBA $300. Nice!

For 2014 we are going to be partnering with local shops in and around the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area for morning fun rides.  Our first Fun Ride of 2014 will start at Topanga Creek Bicycles in Topanga. There will be a variety of rides for varying skill levels. This is a great opportunity to check out some new trails, hang out a a great local shop, and to talk to CORBA representatives about local trail issues. After the rides, we’ll gather back at the shop for an informal meet & greet and brief discussion on trails and other issues. Join us for this FREE meetup and ride. Feel free to bring some tasty goodies to share after the ride.

Happy New Gears!

Ride And Mingle 2 on December 28. Thanks to all who showed up to show their support of CORBA!

As we say goodbye to 2013 and look forward to another year of trail advocacy, I can’t help but reflect on the last year. To me the most significant thing was the loss of our dear friend Danusia Bennett-Taber. I am reminded of her almost daily, whether it’s with her involvement with the CORBA board of directors, or the Mountain Bike Unit, or simply riding on one of our local trails that she so enjoyed. Girlz Gone Riding keeps her memory alive with the first annual Danusia Memorial Ride on May 31. Danusia leaves a legacy of trail stewardship and volunteerism that is unmatched.

WendyKimSpeaking of Girlz Gone Riding, the group had its most successful year ever with great turnouts for their rides and the annual Rocktober XC Gala. We have to give them a big Thank You for helping raise funds and awareness for CORBA and its programs.

CORBA’s programs achieved much success in 2013. Our Trail Crew was extra busy with extensive work in fire-damaged Point Mugu State Park, helping to reestablish damaged trails and do much needed repair work to Guadalasca Trail. Cooperative work with groups throughout greater Los Angeles county, Pasadena, and Thousand Oaks (to name a few) ensure that the public trails remain in shape for shared use.

Our Youth Adventures and Kids Club programs were a little lean this year, yet we still had many outings with kids enjoying the outdoors on mountain bikes. We are in need of more adult coorinators for our Kids Club outings, so if you are interested in leading groups of adults and kids once a month, please send an email to me at info@corbamtb.com.

IMG_8198Our free Introduction to Mountain Bike Skills Class was once again a tremendous success, with more than 300 participants–and that was only 11 classes since December was rained out. Remember, it’s always on the first Saturday of the month at Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas, and it’s always free!

As an advocacy group, we assisted the Santa Clarita Valley Trail Users in regaining access to the Canyon Trail in Placerita Canyon after Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation closed the trail in late 2012. CORBA continues to monitor and give input to a variety of public open space policy projects that threaten to exclude bicycles.

One of the most exciting prospects for the coming year is the emergence of several pump tracks and bike parks that CORBA is  consulting on and helping to move forward. The City of Thousand Oaks, Los Angeles county, and the City of Fillmore have enlisted our expertise for installing pump tracks, and we have been working with the County of Ventura and a newly formed bicycle organization in the Heritage Valley (Fillmore, Santa Paula, Piru) to develop a bike park with flow trails, jumps, and a pump track at Toland Park. This 212 acre parcel could very well become a regional destination for off-road bicycle activities.

HOF awardBeing inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame this year was both an affirmation and a call to action. Even though it’s hard to believe CORBA has been doing this for more than 26 years, it’s also astounding that there is still more to do! We will continue to push for more access to trails, since as we’ve said time and again, the more you disperse users, the less conflicts there will be!

As always, CORBA will promote the concept of “slow is the solution”: Simply slow down around others as you pass, and you solve the issue of people disliking bikes going too fast around them.

See you on the trails!

MBU Training for 2014 Starts January 25

December 31st, 2013

From Julian Serles of the Mountain Bike Unit

Calling all mountain bikers age 18 and over! The Mountain Bike Unit (MBU) is currently recruiting for its 2014 New Recruit Training Class. If you enjoy mountain biking and are interested in giving back to the community by volunteering some time to assist our understaffed Park Rangers in patrolling the parks, then the MBU may be just what you are looking for.  The MBU supports and are sponsored by the National Park Service (NPS), California State Parks (CSP), and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA).

Here’s what it’s all about. The MBU assists in providing park visitors with a quality outdoor experience and preserving natural resources while patrolling over 60,000 acres of public parkland in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Beginning in late January 2014, training will include visitor contact skills, State and National park radio use, park rules and regulations, first aid and CPR training, and field training exercises.

Patrol areas and opportunities include the following:

-National Park Service parks:  Cheeseboro/Palo Comado, Zuma/Trancas Canyons, Rancho Sierra Vista, and Circle X Ranch
-California State Park locations: Malibu Creek, Will Rogers, Point Mugu, and Topanga
-We also patrol MRCA areas near metropolitan Los Angeles, such as Franklin Canyon and Upper Las Virgines Open Space Preserve
-In addition, we volunteer to patrol and support other events such as the LA and Malibu Marathons, Wheels to the Sea, the Ventura County Fair, and CORBA’s Fat Tire Festival
-The MBU also helps support CORBA’s Youth Adventure Program, which offers disadvantaged youth the opportunity to enjoy the mountain biking experience in our beautiful parks

All MBU patrols require at least two patrollers.  All rides are self scheduled on our website. We ask each of our volunteers for 100 patrol hours annually (roughly two four-hour patrols per month).

Would you like to learn more? We invite you to come to King Gillette Ranch Auditorium at 9:00 am on Saturday, January 25, 2014 for an indoor orientation meeting where we will share with you more details about this wonderful program and what patrolling with the MBU is all about. We encourage you to bring your bike and helmet because we plan to take potential recruits on a ride-along (sorted by ability) after the presentation, weather permitting. Visit the MBU training web page for more details, or to contact the MBU via e-mail (admin@mountainbikeunit.com). To see the MBU in action, view our gallery of MBU photos.
