Fundraiser Event at Newbury Park Bicycle Shop 2/24/12

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

CORBA’s first in a series of in-store fundraisers takes place Friday night February 24 at Newbury Park Bicycle Shop in Newbury Park (Thousand Oaks). On this weekend there will also be a trail work day at Guadalasca Trail in Pt. Mugu State Park on Saturday, and group rides led by North Ranch Mountain Bikers in Pt. Mugu State Park on Sunday (see ride details below).

FUN RIDES FEBRUARY 26

Sunday, February 26: CORBA Intermediate Ride.   This is our regular Space Mountain – Rosewood ride except we start in the middle. It’s a fun loop ride with lots of singletrack and switchbacks for your biking enjoyment. We start with a brief road ride from the bike shop to the trail by the house with the model train in the front yard. After the whoop-de-doo trail, we’ll loop back around through the normal starting point for a singletrack climb up Space Mountain. Then we’ll continue along the Los Robles Trail to the “Lookout” and take a break at the picnic table. Then it’s time to catch some thrills as we make our way down the Rosewood Singletrack to Lynn Road. After a short jaunt on pavement we are back to the bike shop where we started.

Total distance is 9.3 miles with 1600′ of climbing, rated at E3 – T3. Time: 7:45 am. Organizer: Randy

Directions:   The ride starts at Newbury Bike Shop, 1560 Newbury Rd # 6, Newbury Park, CA 91320. Exit the 101 Freeway at Ventu Park Rd in Newbury Park, turning south. Take the first right onto Newbury Road, following it around 0.3 miles. Turn left into the strip mall; the bike shop is behind In ‘n Out Burgers.

Sunday, February 26: CORBA Advanced Ride.   This is one of our regular and favorite rides, plus a few road and trail miles to get from the bike shop to the normal start point. From the bike shop, we ride 2.4 miles on the road to the Felton Street access to the Los Robles Trail, which we ride to the regular start point at Wendy and Potrero. From here we’re on the regular ride, starting off on the connector trail that leads to Big Sycamore Canyon Road. We’ll descend down into the canyon and take Sin Nombre over to Sage and make the climb up to the water tower. From here it’s a fast and fun decent down Wood Canyon. Then it’s another climb up to the top via Guadalasca. We’ll ride the fireroad over to Backbone and enjoy another great descent. After a short jaunt on Two Foxes we’ll head up the main fireroad and climb up the dreaded asphalt hill. From the top it’s back to Los Robles Trail, then a road ride from Felton Street to the bike shop.

Total distance is 28 miles with 4000’ of climbing, rated at E4 – T3.5. Time: 7:45 am. Organizer: Jonathan

Nov 13th Fat Tire Fun(d)raiser

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Save the date: November 13, 2011.

For 2011 we have altered the format of our annual anniversary event. In years past it had grown to be quite the undertaking, with lots of festival activities, vendors, a poker ride, even a cyclocross race. Although fun for attendees and a great success, our volunteer coordinators and support staff got pretty burned out, despite the many accolades received from appreciative participants.

The bottom line is to raise money for our programs while having fun celebrating our great trails and advocacy efforts. So this year we decided to keep it simple and do what we love best–RIDE! We are excited to be back at Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas. The main ride route will feature the Crags Road Trail through the creek canyon, past the MASH site, and up Bulldog Motorway, and will also connect to National Park Service property at the Solstice Canyon section of the Backbone Trail with an optional out-and-back to Kanan Dume Road at Tunnel #1. It will continue along Mesa Peak Motoryway and down Tapia Motorway, finishing by coming back into Malibu Creek State Park via the Tapia Spur Trail. With the out-and-back to Kanan Dume Road the ride is 27 miles, or 15 miles if the Backbone Trail to Kanan Rd.  is skipped. There will also be shorter easy rides in Malibu Creek State Park including the Grasslands Trail to De Anza Park. There will be plenty of opportunities for every level of rider to have a great ride in support of your local trail advocacy organization.

Of course, we’d hate to pass up the opportunity to have some cool demo bikes on hand, and so far we have gotten commitments from Trek, Specialized, Giant, and Bionicon who will have some of the newest technology on hand.

We’re also very excited to announce that New Belgium Brewery will be serving samples!

And of course there will be a raffle, with some really cool prizes including bikes, gear, and more.

CORBA’s Cycle World Meet and Greet with Leigh Donovan

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

CORBA’s August 12 2011 fundraiser at Cycle World was a new type of event for CORBA, and turned out to be a completely worthwhile one at that.  The smaller eventCORBA Board and Volunteers, Cycle World Owners Mike and Eric, and World Champ Leigh Donovan brought in almost 60 guests with about a dozen volunteers to keep things running smoothly. Several people walked away with some smokin’ deals on helmets, shoes, body armor and other cycling accessories in the silent auction. Others took advantage of Cycle World’s donation of 10% of all sales to CORBA, and picked up what they needed to continue enjoying the sport.

Former world champ Leigh Donovan was our special guest, and we were honored to have her there. After an introduction by CORBA president Mark Langton, the crowd watched a retrospective video about her career, while she gave a running commentary about many of the race scenes. She reminisced about downhill racing in the days of hard tails and 2” of travel, and reveled in the improvements in bike technology and the growth of the sport. Now the mother of a beautiful daughter, Leigh is still competing and doing well at the national and international levels. Her mission these days is to get more women on bikes, and to further that cause she donated a set of women’s workshops to the auction.

Mark Langton gave a great taste of what people experience at CORBA’s free monthly skills clinics. Though restricted by the shop space, it was clear that Mark’s instruction can and does give many new riders a jump-start into this great sport, boosting their skills and confidence. Steve Messer talked about the importance of volunteering, and at the same time introduced and thanked the volunteers who made the evening possible.

Cycle World owner Erick demonstrated the amount of detail he takes when doing a bike fit, a clear indication that these guys know bikes, and know cycling.

Special thanks to all the volunteers who made it possible. Wendy Engleburg, a long time CORBA volunteer and supporter organized the event. She had help from Tamara Napier, who coordinated the auction, Miyuki for photos and support (photo gallery of the evening), Jim for serving beer and of course everyone who came out on a Friday night to support CORBA and have some fun.

Also we’d like to extend our sincerest thanks to the Cycle World owners Erick and Mike, and their dedicated staff who made the new store available for the event. Lots of people learned about this new Cycle World branch, and met the friendly folks. The pizza and beer on tap went over really well, with most getting their fill of both.

The object of the event was to raise awareness of CORBA, introduce people to a new CORBA-supporting bike shop, and raise funds to keep our volunteer programs  running. On all fronts it was a great success and we’re looking forward to the next one.

Fat Tire Fun(d)raiser Announced for November 13, 2011

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Click to register through Active.comSave the date! November 13, 2011 will be the date for CORBA’s annual fun(d) and awareness raising event. This year we will be returning to Malibu Creek State Park with a slightly different format than in years past. We’re still working out the details, but you can be sure that there will be great rides and some great prizes given away. We will be toning down the festival atmosphere and concentrating on what we love to do most—ride! We’re also hoping to have a full complement of some of the hottest bikes available for testing by some of the industry’s best manufacturers. All proceeds will go to our programs that help keep the trails open to shared use, and hopefully open up more of the many miles of trails that are currently closed to bicycles.

More information is available on our 2011 FTF page. Check back occassionally to look for updates!
