CORBA Nominated for the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

We’re proud to announce that CORBA has been nominated for inclusion in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame, located in Crested Butte, Colorado, celebrates the contributions of the many who have shaped and guided our sport’s history.

Among CORBA’s past and current board members, volunteers and founders are three current inductees in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. Kurt Loheit, Jim Hasenauer, Dr. Al Farrell and the late Charlie Litsky have all been inducted for their roles as individuals, but all contributed to CORBA’s growth and successes, along with numerous other stalwart advocates.

This nomination could not have come at a more appropriate time, as CORBA celebrates 25 years of mountain bike advocacy in 2012.  We sincerely appreciate and are deeply honored by Dr. Al Farrell’s nomination, which can be viewed online on the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame web site.

Past inductees, press and current voting members of the non-profit Hall of Fame are sent ballots to vote on this year’s nominees. Membership is $20 per year, and allows you to vote on the current nominees. When in Crested Butte, a visit to the museum is a great lesson in the sport’s history. Each year between three and seven individuals or groups are inducted from a slate of nominees.

Voting will take place over the summer, with the 2012 induction ceremony to be held at Interbike on September 21. Of course we’d appreciate your vote, and are honored to be listed alongside several other well-deserving nominees in the Advocacy category.

The California Trails & Greenways Conference is

Coming to Los Angeles!!!

Excitement is building as California State Parks and its trail allies prepare for the 27th California Trails & GreenwaysConference taking place April 18 to 20 at the Woodland Hills Marriott.

Conference registration is scheduled to open February 22nd. The California Trails & Greenways Conference is a forum for networking and building support for accessible, inter-connected, quality trail systems; and a venue for trail professionals and advocates to learn practical, up-to-date, trail skills.  This endeavor by California State Parks and the California Trails Conference Foundation helps ensure effective trail stewardship and leadership for generations to come.

The California Trails & Greenways Conference provides opportunities to:

  • Network with, and talk directly to, California’s leading trail experts
  • Find collaborative partners to build support for trail endeavors
  • Learn a full range of trail topics in high quality, innovative sessions
  • Experience hands-on learning through day-long field workshops
  • Address your specific concerns through our table topic sessions
  • Explore exhibits featuring innovative trail-related products and services

All activities are designed to increase the knowledge of trail, recreation and wild land management professionals and advocates, both novice and expert, in order to improve non-motorized, recreational and heritage trail systems and programs throughout California.

Day-long workshops, 27 concurrent sessions, keynote presentations and exhibits all serve to draw California’s leading trail designers, builders and managers to this 3-day event.  The theme for the 2012 Conference is “Navigating Radical Change — The New Normal.” With attendance expected to reach 500, we anticipate the theme will elicit stimulating and creative discussions that will generate new ideas and partnerships.

We live in a tumultuous time, unprecedented in many respects. Believing that “knowledge is power,” the 2012 California Trails & Greenways Conference will explore the multiple challenges facing trails and public lands, what’s known about the trends affecting those challenges, and how to pursue creative solutions while preserving the integrity of the resources we hold dear. We’ll also explore innovative approaches and new collaborations that may inspire your own new solutions for navigating the path ahead.

FUN RIDES FEBRUARY 26

Sunday, February 26: CORBA Intermediate Ride.   This is our regular Space Mountain – Rosewood ride except we start in the middle. It’s a fun loop ride with lots of singletrack and switchbacks for your biking enjoyment. We start with a brief road ride from the bike shop to the trail by the house with the model train in the front yard. After the whoop-de-doo trail, we’ll loop back around through the normal starting point for a singletrack climb up Space Mountain. Then we’ll continue along the Los Robles Trail to the “Lookout” and take a break at the picnic table. Then it’s time to catch some thrills as we make our way down the Rosewood Singletrack to Lynn Road. After a short jaunt on pavement we are back to the bike shop where we started.

Total distance is 9.3 miles with 1600′ of climbing, rated at E3 – T3. Time: 7:45 am. Organizer: Randy

Directions:   The ride starts at Newbury Bike Shop, 1560 Newbury Rd # 6, Newbury Park, CA 91320. Exit the 101 Freeway at Ventu Park Rd in Newbury Park, turning south. Take the first right onto Newbury Road, following it around 0.3 miles. Turn left into the strip mall; the bike shop is behind In ‘n Out Burgers.

Sunday, February 26: CORBA Advanced Ride.   This is one of our regular and favorite rides, plus a few road and trail miles to get from the bike shop to the normal start point. From the bike shop, we ride 2.4 miles on the road to the Felton Street access to the Los Robles Trail, which we ride to the regular start point at Wendy and Potrero. From here we’re on the regular ride, starting off on the connector trail that leads to Big Sycamore Canyon Road. We’ll descend down into the canyon and take Sin Nombre over to Sage and make the climb up to the water tower. From here it’s a fast and fun decent down Wood Canyon. Then it’s another climb up to the top via Guadalasca. We’ll ride the fireroad over to Backbone and enjoy another great descent. After a short jaunt on Two Foxes we’ll head up the main fireroad and climb up the dreaded asphalt hill. From the top it’s back to Los Robles Trail, then a road ride from Felton Street to the bike shop.

Total distance is 28 miles with 4000’ of climbing, rated at E4 – T3.5. Time: 7:45 am. Organizer: Jonathan
